Our 2018 BYU Women’s Conference Instant Choir conductor is Linda Hartman. Linda grew up as the oldest of six in Joseph City, Arizona. Her gift for music was evident at an early age when she began composing music in her Junior High years. Linda was able to not only compose music, but played fluently by ear and could hear a new song on the radio and go sit at the piano and duplicate it. She is the mother of two daughters, Jennifer Esquivel and Jaime Gutierrez who are accomplished musicians in their own right, and grandmother to six grandchildren.
She received a Bachelor’s degree in music from BYU, and taught music in the public schools in Fontana, California for 34 years and was the music director for 18 musicals and has conducted numerous choral concerts with students of all ages. She has also written music for a program that teaches the ABC's and beginning phonics to children ages 3-6. She strongly believes that music is the most effective tool to teach and learn, and that music provides a friendly, infectious medium to help kids remember academic materials.
One of her greatest joys and hobbies is composing music and hearing it performed. She consistently enters a musical composition in the annual church music submissions contest. She has received numerous awards and recognitions for her pieces.
Linda now resides in Smithfield, Utah. She serves as the ward organist, choir director, and until recently as first counselor in the Relief Society presidency in the Smithfield Seventh Ward. Besides music she enjoys reading, helping with humanitarian projects, baking cookies and quilting. Her generosity in providing her music free of charge through her website have enriched the lives of people around the world. The song “The Ninety and Nine” that the instant choir is performing for this Women’s Conference is one of her original compositions.
This year’s music will be The Ninety and Nine and Immovable and Strong.
